Last updated October 7, 2026
Glutathione and KPV are both three amino acid peptides, but they are unrelated. Glutathione has small, short human trials for skin lightening with mixed results. No human studies of KPV were found. FDA Philippines registers some glutathione products by form and has warned against unregistered ones. No KPV registration was found.
Key takeaways
- Glutathione is an antioxidant the body makes from cysteine, glycine and glutamate. KPV is a lab-made fragment (lysine, proline, valine) of the hormone alpha-MSH.
- Glutathione has small randomized trials, mostly oral and topical, for skin lightening. A 2025 systematic review found one placebo-controlled IV study, which did not reach statistical significance.
- All published KPV evidence comes from cells and animals, mainly mouse colitis. The US FDA said in 2026 that it found no information on KPV given to humans.
- FDA Philippines says it has not approved any injectable product for skin lightening, and that injectable glutathione is approved as an adjunct treatment in cisplatin chemotherapy.
- The FDA Philippines Verification Portal lists registered glutathione injections and food supplements, and glutathione cosmetic notifications (October 7, 2026). It showed no KPV registration, and FDA Philippines has warned against one unregistered injectable KPV product.
Side by side
| Glutathione | KPV | |
|---|---|---|
| Class | Tripeptide antioxidant made in the body (cysteine, glycine and glutamate); sold in the Philippines as an injectable drug, food supplement ingredient and cosmetic ingredient | Synthetic tripeptide (lysine-proline-valine) matching the last three amino acids of the hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH); investigational, with no approved product and no published human studies |
| FDA Philippines registration | Varies by form. FDA Philippines says no injectable product is approved for skin lightening; injectable glutathione is approved as an adjunct treatment in cisplatin chemotherapy (Advisory 2019-182). The FDA Philippines Verification Portal (October 7, 2026) lists registered glutathione injections as prescription drugs | No FDA Philippines registration for KPV was found in the verification portal on 2026-10-07, and FDA Philippines has warned against one unregistered injectable KPV product (Advisory 2026-1013). No compound-level FDA Philippines statement was found |

What each one is
What are glutathione and KPV? Both are tripeptides, meaning chains of three amino acids. That is where the likeness ends.
| Glutathione | KPV | |
|---|---|---|
| Amino acids | Cysteine, glycine and glutamate | Lysine, proline and valine |
| Made by the body? | Yes. It works as a major antioxidant, protecting proteins from oxidation and helping cells detoxify | It matches the last three amino acids of the hormone alpha-MSH. KPV itself is made in a lab |
| Proposed action | Inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase and shifting melanin from darker to lighter forms (proposed skin-lightening effect) | Anti-inflammatory signaling. A 2010 review says the exact mechanism is unknown |
| Forms described in sources | Oral, injectable and topical | Injectable, oral, topical and nasal spray products offered online (US FDA) |
A 2010 review says KPV keeps most of alpha-MSH's anti-inflammatory activity without the hormone's tanning action in the studies reviewed. A 2026 review says turning glutathione's proposed mechanisms into meaningful clinical results "remains uncertain."
Evidence compared
How strong is the evidence for each? Glutathione has small human trials. KPV has none.
| Glutathione | KPV | |
|---|---|---|
| Human trials | Small randomized trials, mostly oral or topical, for skin lightening | None found |
| Example trial | 60 healthy medical students, oral glutathione vs placebo, 4 weeks (2012) | Not applicable |
| Systematic reviews | 2019 and 2025 reviews of skin lightening | Not applicable (no human studies found) |
| Animal and lab studies | Not the focus of the sources used here | Mouse colitis and skin inflammation models, cell studies |
| Registered human trials | Not checked for this page | None found on ClinicalTrials.gov (October 7, 2026) |
Glutathione. A 2025 systematic review found five randomized controlled trials and one open-arm study of oral glutathione showing a lower melanin index than placebo. It found only one placebo-controlled study of IV glutathione: 37.5% responded versus 18.7% (p 0.054), which did not reach statistical significance.
The reviewers described oral and topical effects as moderate and "unsustainable", and concluded that "IV glutathione is contraindicated due to lack of efficacy and side effects." An earlier 2019 review called the evidence "still inconclusive." In a 4-week oral trial of 60 people, the difference from placebo was significant at only two of six skin sites.
KPV. All published KPV evidence comes from cells and animals. In two mouse colitis models, KPV in drinking water reduced colitis and inflammatory markers (2008). The US FDA said in July 2026 that it "did not find any information on the use of KPV (free base) or KPV acetate administered in humans," and found no human pharmacokinetic studies.
Risks compared
What is known about the risks? For glutathione injections, regulators describe specific harms. For KPV, the risks in people are unknown.
| Glutathione | KPV | |
|---|---|---|
| Regulator list of possible harms | FDA Philippines: toxic effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system; Stevens Johnson Syndrome; infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C with non-medical or non-sterile practice | US FDA: "potential safety risks associated with the use in humans are unknown" |
| Reported adverse events | US FDA (August 2026): at least 30 patients with adverse events after IV glutathione made from dietary supplement grade ingredients, including fever, chills and signs of shock, some hospitalized | US FDA found no reports in its adverse event database through December 3, 2025, and says this does not show KPV is free of risk |
| Toxicity studies | Not covered by the sources used here | None submitted or found by the US FDA |
| Long-term safety | Oral: "long-term safety has not been established" (2012 trial authors) | No data |
FDA Philippines also says that because glutathione affects melanin, "there are theoretical concerns about the long term skin cancer risk." The US FDA says it is "particularly concerned" about the lack of any human data on KPV, including on immune reactions.
Regulator statements compared
What have regulators said? Both have US FDA statements and FDA Philippines advisories.
| Glutathione | KPV | |
|---|---|---|
| FDA Philippines | Advisory No. 2019-182: no injectable product is approved for skin lightening; injectable glutathione is approved as an adjunct treatment in cisplatin chemotherapy. Many later advisories against unregistered glutathione injectables and food supplements, and unauthorized glutathione cosmetics | Advisory No. 2026-1013 (September 1, 2026): warning against an unregistered injectable KPV product with no Certificate of Product Registration |
| US FDA, pharmacy compounding list | In category 1, "Bulk Drug Substances Under Evaluation" (list updated May 14, 2026) | July 2026 briefing proposed not adding KPV to the list, and noted this was not a final decision. Earlier in category 2, "may present significant safety risks"; the nomination was withdrawn |
| US FDA, other statements | Compounders "should not use dietary supplement grade ingredients when making injectable drugs" (August 2026) | No USP or NF monograph, and not a component of any FDA-approved drug |
PH status compared
What is the status in the Philippines? For glutathione, it depends on the form. For KPV, no registration was found.
| Glutathione | KPV | |
|---|---|---|
| Injections | 17 glutathione injection products listed as registered prescription drugs (Verification Portal, October 7, 2026). The records do not show indications | No registration found. One unregistered injectable product named in Advisory No. 2026-1013 |
| Oral drug | One over-the-counter combination tablet containing L-glutathione | None found |
| Food supplements | More than 500 portal records named "Registered as Food Supplement with NO APPROVED THERAPEUTIC CLAIMS" | None found |
| Cosmetics | 449 cosmetic notifications matching "glutathione" | None found |
| Skin lightening | FDA Philippines: no injectable product approved | Not applicable |
The portal is a keyword search, so the glutathione food and cosmetic counts include any product with glutathione in its name. A registered product is not approved for every use: FDA Philippines says no injectable is approved for skin lightening.
For KPV, a search with no record is not an official FDA Philippines statement on the compound. To check any product, search the FDA Philippines verification portal at verification.fda.gov.ph.
What cannot be compared
Some comparisons are not possible from the sources.
- No shared trial. No study comparing glutathione and KPV was found in the sources used here.
- Different questions studied. The glutathione trials covered here looked at skin color, mostly in healthy volunteers. KPV's studies looked at inflammation in mice and cells.
- Human versus animal data. Glutathione results come from people; KPV has no human results to set beside them.
This page does not rank them. Whether any treatment suits you is a decision for a licensed doctor or a board-certified dermatologist.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between glutathione and KPV?
Glutathione is an antioxidant the body makes from three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamate. KPV is a different three amino acid peptide (lysine, proline, valine) that matches the end of the hormone alpha-MSH. They are unrelated molecules.
Has KPV been tested in humans?
No human studies were found. The US FDA said in its July 2026 review that it "did not find any information on the use of KPV (free base) or KPV acetate administered in humans". A ClinicalTrials.gov search on October 7, 2026 found no registered KPV study.
Has glutathione been tested in humans?
Yes, in small, short trials. A 2025 systematic review found five randomized controlled trials and one open-arm study of oral glutathione showing a lower melanin index than placebo. The reviewers called the effects moderate and unsustainable.
Is glutathione approved for skin whitening in the Philippines?
No injectable product is. FDA Philippines says it "has not approved any injectable products for skin lightening" and that injectable glutathione is approved as an adjunct treatment in cisplatin chemotherapy. Some glutathione food supplements are registered with no approved therapeutic claims.
Is KPV registered with FDA Philippines?
No KPV registration was found in the FDA Philippines Verification Portal on October 7, 2026. In Advisory No. 2026-1013, FDA Philippines warned the public against an unregistered injectable KPV product.
What has the US FDA said about KPV?
In a July 2026 briefing, the US FDA said it found no human data on KPV and no toxicity studies, and proposed not adding KPV to its list of substances allowed in pharmacy compounding. It noted this was not its final decision.
What has the US FDA said about glutathione injections?
In August 2026 the US FDA said it knew of at least 30 patients with adverse events after IV glutathione made from dietary supplement grade ingredients, consistent with excessive endotoxin. It reminded compounders not to use dietary supplement grade ingredients in injectable drugs.
What are the risks of glutathione injections?
FDA Philippines lists possible toxic effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system, a concern about Stevens Johnson Syndrome, and infection risks such as HIV and hepatitis when given by non-medical practitioners or in non-sterile settings.
What are the risks of KPV?
They are unknown. The US FDA says it lacks important safety information, including whether KPV would cause harm in humans, and is concerned about possible immune reactions. FDA Philippines says the unregistered KPV product it warned about gives "no assurance as to its quality, safety and efficacy".
Should I choose glutathione or KPV for my skin?
This page does not rank them. Glutathione has small human trials with mixed results, and KPV has no human data for any use. Whether any treatment suits you is a decision for a licensed doctor or a board-certified dermatologist.
