BMI categories
We use the Asia-Pacific cut-offs (WHO Western Pacific, 2000), recommended for East, South and Southeast Asian populations. They sit lower than the global WHO cut-offs because health risks rise at a lower BMI.
| Category | Asia-Pacific BMI | Global WHO BMI |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Under 18.5 | Under 18.5 |
| Healthy weight | 18.5 to 22.9 | 18.5 to 24.9 |
| Overweight | 23 to 24.9 | 25 to 29.9 |
| Obesity | 25 and above | 30 and above |
How BMI is calculated
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. In pounds and inches, multiply the result by 703.
BMI does not measure body fat directly. It can misread people with a lot of muscle, older adults, and anyone pregnant. Use it as one starting point, not a diagnosis.
Estimate only, for general information. It is not a diagnosis and does not decide eligibility for any treatment. A licensed clinician reviews your health information before recommending treatment.
