No controlled human trial of lipotropic (MIC) injections for weight loss was found. Injectable vitamin B12 is approved in the US only for B12 deficiency, and its label warns of anaphylaxis. No FDA Philippines registration for a lipotropic injection was found, and no FDA Philippines advisory on them was found.

Key takeaways

  • Searches of PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov on 7 October 2026 found no controlled human trial of injected methionine, inositol and choline (MIC), with or without vitamin B12, for weight or fat loss.
  • The US label for cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) injection covers B12 deficiency due to malabsorption. Weight loss is not a labeled use.
  • The same label warns: "Anaphylactic shock and death have been reported after parenteral vitamin B 12 administration."
  • Choline deficiency can cause fatty liver, but the NIH says frank choline deficiency in healthy men and nonpregnant women is very rare.
  • A search of the FDA Philippines verification portal for "lipotropic" on 7 October 2026 returned no records.

What are lipotropic injections?

Lipotropic injections are injectable "fat burner" blends. They usually contain methionine, inositol and choline (MIC), often with vitamin B12. They are also sold as MIC, MIC with B12, Lipo-B, fat burner or fat blaster injections.

There is no standard formula. The ingredients and amounts vary by seller, and no regulator or peer-reviewed source describing a standard blend was found.

No US FDA, FDA Philippines, TGA, MHRA or Health Canada statement specific to lipotropic injections was found.

Is there evidence they help with weight loss?

No controlled human trial showing that they do was found. Searches run on 7 October 2026:

Search Result
PubMed: lipotropic, injection, and weight, obesity or fat 9 records, all animal or lab studies or unrelated topics (for example chicken and cattle feeding studies). None was a human weight-loss trial
PubMed: methionine, inositol and choline, with weight or obesity 9 records, mostly animal diet studies of fatty liver and reviews. None was a human trial of MIC injections
ClinicalTrials.gov: lipotropic 1 study, a terminated phase 2 trial in liver disease linked to intravenous nutrition. Not a weight-loss trial

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, quoting the US Government Accountability Office, says little is known about whether weight loss supplements work, and that some have been associated with the potential for physical harm. Its fact sheet does not cover lipotropic injections specifically.

Why are they called "lipotropic"?

"Lipotropic" describes nutrients involved in how the liver handles fat. The rationale for the injections rests on choline, but it has not been shown for injections.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says "Choline deficiency can cause muscle damage, liver damage, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD or hepatosteatosis)". It also says "frank choline deficiency in healthy men and nonpregnant women is very rare".

That choline is needed for normal liver fat handling does not show that injecting it causes fat loss in people who are not deficient.

What does the vitamin B12 injection label say?

Vitamin B12 injection is an approved medicine in the US, but only for B12 deficiency. Weight loss is not a labeled use. This applies to B12 alone, not to lipotropic blends.

The US label for cyanocobalamin injection says it "is indicated for vitamin B 12 deficiencies due to malabsorption". Examples include pernicious anemia, after stomach or bowel surgery, and some gut diseases. The label adds that higher B12 needs "can usually be met with oral supplementation".

Label warnings

Warning What the label says
Severe allergic reaction "Anaphylactic shock and death have been reported after parenteral vitamin B 12 administration."
Leber's disease (hereditary optic nerve atrophy) Patients with early Leber's disease "who were treated with cyanocobalamin suffered severe and swift optic atrophy"
Other reactions Pulmonary edema and heart failure early in treatment, peripheral vascular thrombosis, mild diarrhea and itching
Additives Benzyl alcohol and aluminum content, with specific risks in premature infants and people with impaired kidney function

What is choline chloride's status with the US FDA?

The US FDA's 503A bulk drug substances list, updated May 14, 2026, places "Choline Chloride" in Category 1, "Bulk Drug Substances Under Evaluation". Methionine and inositol were not found on that list.

What do FDA Philippines records show?

No FDA Philippines registration for a lipotropic or MIC injection was found. A search of the verification portal on 7 October 2026 found:

Search term Result
lipotropic No records in any category
methionine, inositol Registered oral food supplements and some oral drug combinations. None was an injectable MIC weight-loss product

The oral products are different products and do not describe lipotropic injections.

No FDA Philippines advisory or statement on lipotropic, MIC or fat burner injections was found in searches of the FDA website on 7 October 2026.

FDA Philippines tells the public to check products on its verification portal, verification.fda.gov.ph. It asks the public to report suspected unregistered health products to ereport@fda.gov.ph or through e-Sumbong on www.fda.gov.ph.

Medicines studied for weight are covered in our guide to GLP-1 medicines.

Frequently asked questions

What are lipotropic injections?

They are injectable "fat burner" blends, usually methionine, inositol and choline (MIC), often with vitamin B12. They are also sold as MIC, Lipo-B, fat burner or fat blaster injections. Ingredients and amounts vary by seller.

Do lipotropic injections work for weight loss?

No controlled human trial showing that they do was found. Searches of PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov on 7 October 2026 found no controlled trial of injected MIC, with or without B12, for weight loss, and no registered trial of lipotropic injections for weight loss.

Do B12 injections help you lose weight?

Weight loss is not a labeled use. The US label for cyanocobalamin injection covers vitamin B12 deficiency due to malabsorption, for example in pernicious anemia or after stomach or bowel surgery. The label adds that higher B12 needs "can usually be met with oral supplementation".

What are the side effects of B12 injections?

The US cyanocobalamin injection label warns that "anaphylactic shock and death have been reported" after injected vitamin B12. It also lists pulmonary edema and heart failure early in treatment, peripheral vascular thrombosis, mild diarrhea and itching.

What does the B12 injection label warn about?

The US label says patients with early Leber's disease (a hereditary optic nerve condition) treated with cyanocobalamin "suffered severe and swift optic atrophy". It also notes risks from benzyl alcohol and aluminum content.

What does "lipotropic" mean?

It describes nutrients involved in how the liver handles fat. The NIH says choline deficiency can cause liver damage and fatty liver disease. That does not show that injecting these nutrients causes fat loss in people who are not deficient.

Are lipotropic injections registered with FDA Philippines?

A search of the FDA Philippines verification portal for "lipotropic" on 7 October 2026 returned no records. Methionine and inositol appear in registered oral food supplements and oral drug combinations, which are different products.

Has FDA Philippines issued a warning on lipotropic injections?

No FDA Philippines advisory or statement on lipotropic, MIC or fat burner injections was found in searches on 7 October 2026.

Are lipotropic injections the same as fat-dissolving injections?

They are sold for a similar purpose but are different blends. The US FDA says common ingredients in unapproved fat-dissolving injections are phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate. Lipotropic injections are usually methionine, inositol and choline, often with B12.
